Do I need a referral to see a physio or chiropractor in NSW?

2 June 2026 · Prestons Injury Therapy

It's one of the first questions people ask when they're in pain and want help fast: "Do I actually need to see my GP first?" For most people in New South Wales, the answer is reassuringly simple.

The short answer: no referral needed

Physiotherapists, chiropractors and remedial massage therapists are all primary contact practitioners. That means you can book an appointment directly — no GP referral required. You can call us, book online, and be assessed and treated in the same visit.

This is great news when you're dealing with a fresh injury or a flare-up, because the sooner you start treatment, the smoother recovery usually is.

When you do need a referral

There are a few specific situations where a referral or formal paperwork is required — usually because someone else is paying for your care:

  • Workers' compensation (WorkCover) — for a work-related injury, your claim and a referral are needed so treatment can be billed correctly.
  • Chronic Disease Management (CDM/EPC) plans — if your GP has set up a care plan for a chronic condition, the referral unlocks a Medicare rebate for a set number of visits.
  • Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) — DVA clients need a referral for funded treatment.
  • Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance — for motor-vehicle injuries, your claim details are required.

If none of these apply to you, you can simply book in.

What about private health insurance?

You don't need a referral to claim physiotherapy, chiropractic or remedial massage on extras (ancillary) cover. Whether you get a rebate — and how much — depends on your level of cover and your fund. We have HICAPS on site, so in most cases we can process your claim on the spot and you only pay the gap.

What happens at your first visit

Your initial consultation is a proper assessment, not a rushed adjustment. We'll:

  1. Ask about your symptoms, history and goals
  2. Carry out a hands-on physical examination
  3. Explain what we've found in plain language
  4. Start treatment and give you a clear plan to follow
