What is Hijama (wet cupping) and what are its benefits?
30 April 2026 · Prestons Injury Therapy
Hijama — the Arabic term for wet cupping — is a traditional therapy that has been practised for centuries across many cultures. At our Prestons clinic we offer it as a professional, sterile treatment, and it's one of the questions we're asked about most. Here's a straightforward explanation.
What is Hijama?
Hijama uses gentle suction to draw small amounts of blood from just beneath the skin's surface. The idea is to help the body remove toxins, impurities and stagnant blood, and to stimulate fresh circulation and natural healing in the treated area.
How the treatment works
The process is simple and carefully controlled:
- Cups are applied to the skin over the area of concern, creating gentle suction.
- The cups are removed, and a tiny, sterile incision is made.
- The cups are reapplied, and light suction draws out a small amount of blood.
- The area is cleaned and dressed.
The negative pressure opens up the tissue, increases blood flow, and is believed to help restore the body's natural balance. Treatments use single-use, sterile equipment every time.
What it may help with
People come to us for Hijama to support relief from:
- Muscular pain and inflammation
- Lumbar disc and cervical (neck) issues
- Reduced circulation
- General wellbeing and recovery
What to expect afterwards
It's normal to have some temporary circular marks or light bruising where the cups were applied. These typically fade within about ten days. Most people find the treatment comfortable and relaxing.
Who should avoid Hijama
Hijama isn't suitable for everyone. You should not have it if you are pregnant or taking blood thinners. If you have a medical condition, check with us first and we'll advise whether it's appropriate.
A note on cost: since April 2019, private health insurers in Australia no longer provide rebates for natural therapies such as Hijama, so it isn't claimable on extras cover.
